Carpet & Upholstery Stain Removal
Stains on carpets and upholstery are a common problem in many homes. Spills such as coffee, wine, grease, ink, mud, and pet accidents can quickly leave marks that are difficult to remove using household products.
Professional stain removal treatments can significantly improve many stains and restore the appearance of carpets and fabric furniture.
In many cases, stain treatment is carried out as part of our carpet cleaning Birmingham service or upholstery cleaning Birmingham service, depending on the material being cleaned.
Common Carpet & Upholstery Stains
Everyday life can leave many types of stains on carpets and furniture. Some of the most common stains we treat include:
- Coffee and tea stains
- Â Red wine spills
- Â Mud and outdoor dirt
- Â Grease and food stains
- Â Ink and makeup marks
- Blood stains
- Pet accidents and odours
Different stains require different treatments. Many supermarket stain removers use a one-size-fits-all formula which often struggles to remove specific stains and can sometimes make the problem worse.
Professional cleaning products and techniques are designed to treat particular types of stains without damaging the carpet or fabric.

Professional Stain Removal
Many stubborn stains require professional-grade cleaning products and specialised stain treatments to break down the substances causing the mark.
Our stain removal service is often included as part of our carpet cleaning where we use powerful extraction equipment to remove dirt, stains, and residues from deep within the carpet fibres.
For fabric furniture and sofas, stain treatment is usually performed during upholstery cleaning with carefully selected cleaning solutions suitable for delicate fabrics.
In some situations, we can treat individual stains without a full cleaning service if only a small area needs attention.

Tea Stain Removal From Carpet
A genuine example of a tea stain that became worse after a shop-bought product was used, before being treated with professional stain removal and hot water extraction cleaning.

Tea stain visible in the carpet fibres
Stain treated and carpet left cleaner
Tea stains can be difficult to remove from carpet, especially when a customer has already tried to treat the area with a shop-bought stain remover. In this case, the customer had used Vanish on the tea stain before we arrived. At first, it looked like the stain had improved, but after around an hour the mark became larger and more noticeable.
This can sometimes happen when the stain is disturbed in the carpet fibres or when residue is left behind after treatment. Tea contains tannins, which can leave a brown stain, and if the area is not treated correctly the mark can spread or become more visible as it dries.
This does not mean Vanish is a bad product, but in some cases the stain needs professional carpet stain treatment to remove it properly.
When we arrived, we explained that we would test the stain first using professional stain removal products and hot water extraction cleaning. If the stain responded well to treatment, we would carry on and complete the work. In this case, the treatment was successful and the tea stain was removed, leaving the carpet looking much cleaner.
Why Some Stains Cannot Be Fully Removed
While many stains can be greatly improved, it is important to understand that complete stain removal cannot always be guaranteed.
Some stains permanently change the colour of carpet or fabric fibres. This is especially common with:
• older, untreated stains
• strong dyes such as red wine or ink
• pet urine that has caused colour damage
• bleach or chemical reactions
Even in these cases, professional treatment can often improve the appearance of the stain and reduce its visibility.
What to Do When a Spill Happens.
If a spill occurs on your carpet or upholstery, acting quickly can improve the chances of successful stain removal.
- Remove dry residue
Gently remove any solid residue using a blunt knife or spoon. - Blot, don’t rub
Use a clean white cloth or towel to blot the stain and absorb as much moisture as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain or damage the fibres. - Test stain removers first
If using a commercial stain remover, test a small patch first. Some products can set stains permanently if they react badly with the fibres.
If the stain does not improve, it is best to contact a professional cleaner.

Protecting Your Carpets From Future Stains
If stains are becoming a regular problem, you may wish to consider stain protection treatments such as Scotchgard.
These treatments help protect carpet fibres by creating a barrier that makes spills easier to clean before they become permanent stains. Stain protection can also help reduce carpet wear and make regular vacuuming more effective.
Real Stain Removal Results

Red Ink Stain Removal From Carpet
This carpet had a red ink stain that had soaked into the fibres and wouldn’t come out with normal cleaning.
We applied a targeted stain treatment along with deep carpet cleaning to break down the ink and improve the appearance as much as possible.
Results can vary depending on how long the stain has been there, but in this case we achieved a very noticeable improvement.

Blood Stains on Carpets Need a Different Approach
Most carpet stains come from everyday spills such as coffee, wine, food, mud or pet accidents, but blood can behave differently. Blood can soak into the carpet fibres, dry into the pile and become harder to treat when the wrong products are used.
Scrubbing, hot water, bleach or strong shop-bought stain removers can sometimes spread the mark, push it deeper into the carpet or leave a darker patch behind.
This is why blood stains on carpets need to be assessed carefully before cleaning, especially where the stain has dried or has already been treated.
For carpet-specific help after falls, cuts, nosebleeds, medical incidents or household accidents, please see our specialist blood stains on carpets service. We can assess the affected carpet from photos first and give honest advice on what may be possible before booking.
Oil Stain Removal From Carpet
Oil-based marks can be difficult to remove from carpet because the residue can grip the fibres and attract more dirt over time. Normal household cleaning products can sometimes spread the stain or push it deeper into the carpet.
On this job, we treated a visible oil stain using professional carpet stain treatment and extraction cleaning. The result depends on the carpet fibre, how long the oil has been there and what has already been used on the stain, but professional treatment can often make a big improvement.
If you have an oil, grease or dark spill mark on your carpet, our carpet stain removal service can help assess the stain and choose the best cleaning method before starting the work.
